Seeing the Lights

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress… The people walking in darkness have seen a great light… a light has dawned. Isaiah 9: 1-2
In Antioch, Tennessee, there is a young couple who fills their yard and trims their house with 50,000 colored, flashing, flowing and jumping LED lights synchronized to music every Advent season. Every year Davidson County sponsors a Christmas lighting contests for residents, and the Gill’s won in 2011. On their website they invited people to come by and bring money or food for Second Harvest Food Bank. From Thanksgiving to the New Year they welcomed people who came in cars, buses, church vans, limousines, trucks and walking to see the winning entry. When asked “Why do you do this?” the Gills’ simply reply, “The people love seeing the lights and giving help to others.”
Edward Grinnan, Editor-in-Chief of Guidepost magazine, calls Christmas a feeling, “Yet it’s a feeling that can be muddled in all the hustle and bustle, the commercialism and secularization.” This heaps a lot of gloom on some people. Mr. Grinnan goes to say, “Christmas is also a reason – a Savior was born in Bethlehem to a virgin and her husband, sent by God to redeem mankind.” Here in lies the remedy for their gloom. As God’s children, we are responsible to shed the true Light every day, and in every way, so their gloom can become feelings of joy and happiness at Advent and every day.
Gill’s Bright Lights gives the people who come by to see their display the Christmas feeling. It is a time for everyone to pause and reflect on the real reason for burring lights during the Advent season. The feeling and reason come from God and are powerful to save all who come to Him. Every Christian has the responsibility to share that no celebration, gift, or person can bring to the heart the feeling that Jesus gives.
Prayer: Dear Father of Advent, thank you for giving us this blessed season, in which we can praise and glorify our Savior, Jesus. Remind us that lights, celebrations, and all the hullabaloo is not the real reason for Christmas. Help us to spread the truth about your Gift-the Light of the world to all mankind.
